GASPÉ (Quebec) - During his visit to Gaspé, the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, gave the go-ahead for a $5.5 M project to rebuild Rue du Quai in the Port of Gaspé (Sandy Beach). The first steps will involve finalizing the different preliminary studies required, establishing the road alignment, surveying, preparing a contaminated material management plan, conducting an environmental impact assessment and complet ing the final plans and specifications.
"Today's announcement once again demonstrates the government's commitment to investing in the maintenance of regional federal infrastructure," said Minister Cannon. "This project will allow the City of Gaspé to develop its industrial park and help the region embark on an economic upswing thanks to the use of the adjacent federal port facilities."
Rue du Quai will be completely rebuilt in compliance with the environmental standards in effect, while ensuring the safety of users and clients. Moreover, the work will eventually allow the City of Gaspé to proceed with its intention to acquire the new road that will aid in its economic development.
"This investment brings us one step closer to an agreement with the City of Gaspé concerning the eventual transfer of Rue du Quai's ownership," added Minister Cannon.
Details regarding the project's total value will be announced during the public call for tenders. Specialize d firms will be selected during a rigorous process to ensure that the different steps are successfully completed. The project is scheduled to begin this year and the different phases should be completed by 2013.
Transport Canada will continue wo rking with the City of Gaspé and the road's main users to keep disruptions to activities at the commercial wharf and on the road to a minimum. Currently the property of Transport Canada, Rue du Quai is 0.8 km long, stretching from Route 132 to the co mmercial wharf. It serves the commercial wharf and provides access to the City of Gaspé's industrial park.
