Kapuskasing, Ontario, August 12, 2008 - Guy Lauzon, Parliamentary Secretary for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, today announced the Government of Canada will conside er improvements to the water distribution system in the Town of Kapuskasing as a priority for up to $1,867,924 in federal infrastructure funding.
The federal contribution would be up to one-third of total eligible costs, which are estimat ed at $5,603,773.
"Maintaining a healthy and clean environment is directly related to the health and prosperity of communities and their residents, and is a priority for our Government," said Mr. Lauzon. "Supporting improvement s to this water distribution system is one of the ways we will deliver results for the residents of Kapuskasing."
"With this federal commitment, we will be able to make these necessary upgrades," said Alan Spacek, Mayor of the T own of Kapuskasing. "An efficient water system is critical for the health and well-being of our residents."
The project involves the replacement of the elevated storage tank, as well as a new water transmission main to connect to the existing distribution system. The upgrades will increase the storage capacity of treated water in the system, improving the safety and reliability of the community's water supply.
Funding for this project comes from the $200 million, anno unced in March 2007, to top up the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) nationwide. The Government of Canada is directing $64 million in funding to existing clean water applications under the MRIF in Ontario.
Federal financial support for the project is conditional on the initiative meeting all applicable eligibility requirements and other program criteria, a federal review of the project, the successful completion of an environmental assessment, assurance by the municipality that the rema ining project costs have been fully financed and accounted for, and the signing of a contribution agreement for the project detailing the project elements and any other federal requirements.
