OTTAWA, ONTARIO, August 29, 2008 - On September 1, workers in Canada will celebrate Labour Day. The Honourable Jean Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, wishes to acknowledge the contribution of all workers to the well-being of our country.
"Canada is a strong and prosperous country thanks to the efforts of all workers," said Minister Blackburn. "Labour Day provides an opportunity to praise all the men and women who generate the wealth of our nation."
Labour Day has been celebrated for over a century, recognizing every year the progress achieved on the labour front. This includes new initiatives, legislation and regulations brought forth by the Government of Canada to respond to evolving economic and social realities.
Over the past year, the Labour Program has taken action on key issues. Legislation was passed to protect the civilian jobs of reservists. The Wage Earner Protection Program came into force to guarantee the payment of unpaid wages and vacation pay owed to workers if their employer goes bankrupt. The Labour Program also implemented new regulations to prevent violence in the workplace and to address ergonomic-related hazards.
The mandate of the Labour Program is to promote fair, safe and productive workplaces and cooperative workplace relations. Through its programs and services, the Labour Program assists workers and employers and supports modern, innovative work environments.
