ANTIGONISH, Nova Scotia, September 3, 2008 - Works written by emerging and established writers will continue to be available to Canadian readers, thanks to an investment by Canada's Government.
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, on behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding for The Antigonish Review, a quarterly literary journal published by St. Francis Xavier University.
Funding of more than $12,000 will be used by the journal to defray its Canadian editorial expenses and production costs. The Review features poetry, fiction, reviews, critical articles, and original graphics from all parts of Canada and the world. Many writers who got their start at the Review, such as Wayne Johnston, David Adams Richards, Carol Shields, and Leo MacKay, have gone on to become recognized in the larger literary community.
"Our Government is proud to support literary magazines like The Antigonish Review," said Minister Verner. "These magazines showcase the talent and creativity of our writers and reflect our country's thriving literary scene."
"I am proud that our Government is supporting The Antigonish Review, which offers East Coast, Canadian, and international writers the opportunity to share their work with Canadian readers who love literature," said Minister MacKay. "I encourage the Review to continue its efforts to publish quality literary pieces by talented authors."
"This funding from the Canada Magazine Fund of Canadian Heritage plays an essential role in our ability to maintain excellence and to continue improving our service to our writers and readers," said Gerald Trites, Co-Editor of The Antigonish Review.
The Government of Canada has provided funding under the Support for Arts and Literary Magazines component of the Canada Magazine Fund. This initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage is a formula-based contribution program that rewards eligible Canadian-owned and -controlled magazine publishers based on their editorial and production expenses.
