CARLETON, Quebec, September 4, 2008 - Residents and visitors to Gaspésie will have access to a variety of artistic performances during Maximum 90's 2008-2009 season and the traditional music festival, "La Virée," thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding of $35,000 for Maximum 90.
This funding will provide local artists with the opportunity to showcase their talent and to gain recognition in their community. A variety of shows will be presented throughout the year, in addition to a traditional music festival, "La Virée." Now in its eighth season, the festival will take place from October 10 to 12, 2008, and will feature traditional music and dance, storytelling, and legends.
"This organization skilfully combines tradition and innovation, artistic expe riences and educational activities, and is not afraid to venture off the beaten path," said Minister Verner. "I am proud that the Government of Canada supports organizations like Maximum 90, which bring people together to enjoy local arts herita ge on a Canadian cultural stage."
Maximum 90 is a multidisciplinary arts presenter that has been offering singing, musical, and dance performances annually for the past 18 years. The 2008-2009 season will include more than 30 high-qualit y shows appealing to community members of all ages. These performances will bring to the stage approximately 100 artists from Quebec and across Canada.
The Government of Canada has provided financial assistance under the Department of Canadi an Heritage's Arts Presentation Program. This program aims to provide Canadians with more opportunities to experience the country's rich and diverse culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live performances, and other artistic experi ences.
