OTTAWA-Their Excellencies the Right Honorable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond will attend the ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Canadian Mint. The event will be held on Friday, September 12, 2008, at 5 p.m., at the Royal Canadian Mint (320 Sussex Drive, Ottawa).
One hundred years ago, former governor general Earl Grey minted the very first coin created by the Dominion of Canada. The coin was a silver 50-cent piece bearing the effigy of His Majesty King Edward VII, inaugurating the Ottawa branch of the Great Britain's Royal Mint. Repeating Earl Grey's gesture to celebrate this historical event, the Governor General will deliver a speech and mint a commemorative replica of the first 50-cent coin.
