OTTAWA, September 25, 2008 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume, distribute or sell White Rabbit brand candy as they may be contaminated with melamine.
White Rabbit brand candy, usually a product of China, are known to be available for sale in a variety of flavours throughout Canada in various retail stores. All White Rabbit brand candy are affected by this alert.
Importers and distributors are advised to stop distributing White Rabbit brand candy and to initiate a voluntary recall of products. The CFIA is working with the importers to remove the affected products from the marketplace. Retailers are also advised to remove all White Rabbit brand candy from sale.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products in Canada.
The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
This recall is a part of the Government of Canada's ongoing investigation into milk and milk-derived products sourced in/from China that may have been distributed in Canada.
Melamine is a chemical compound used in a number of commercial and industrial applications. Canada does not allow its use as a food ingredient.
