The RCMP has received Mr. Kiedrowski's report and is considering its observations and recommendations. The report was commissioned by the RCMP to examine issues relating to the acquisition of the Conducted Energy Weapon by the RCMP, as well as operational policies and procedures, training and accountability mechanisms.
The RCMP has already made a number of improvements to its CEW policies, training, practices and reporting requirements, including:
- Restricting the use of CEWs to incidents involving threats to officer or public safety
- Requiring RCMP officers to be re-certified annually
- Enhanced use of force reporting
- Quarterly and annual reports on CEW usage
The RCMP will continue to work with the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP (CPC), other police services, medical experts and others to further enhance our policies, training, practices and reporting requirements relating to CEWs.
