OTTAWA - October 16, 2008 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has awarded $13,000 to the Métis Nation of Ontario to support its participation in the environmental assessment of the proposed Lower Mattagami Hydroelectric Complex Redevelopment Project in Ontario.
A Participant Funding Review Committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, was established to examine the request for funding received for this project. All of the Committee's recommendations are unanimous and are contained in the report of the Funding Review Committee. The report, along with further information on the project, is available in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 07-03-26302.
This funding is being provided to assist the recipient to participate in the comprehensive study process and in the review of the comprehensive study report to be submitted by the responsible authority, Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The funding is made available through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency.
Ontario Power Generation is proposing to redevelop the Lower Mattagami Hydroelectric Complex, located approximately 70 km northeast of Kapuskasing. The Little Long, Harmon and Kipling generating stations will be expanded with the addition of a turbine/generator and the Smoky Falls site will be redeveloped to accommodate a new generating station.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
