No. 207
The Honourable David Emerson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today offered sincere condolences to the communities affected by the earthquakes that struck southwestern Pakistan early this morning. The earthquakes have left more than 100 people dead and have affected thousands of families in several villages.
Officials at the Canadian High Commission in Islamabad are in close contact with Pakistani authorities and humanitarian organizations to determine the impact of the earthquakes. Canada stands ready to help should the Government of Pakistan request international assistance to respond to identified needs. In the meantime, core financial contributions provided by Canada to international humanitarian agencies are helping these organizations provide immediate life-saving assistance to affected communities.
