OTTAWA-Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, presented the insignia of Companion of the Order of Canada to the Honourable Barnett J. (Barney) Danson, in a private ceremony in Toronto on October 2, 2008. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada on May 3, 2007.

A celebrated veteran of the Second World War and former federal cabinet minister, Barney Danson has led a life of distinguished service to Canada. An advocate of veterans' issues, he spearheaded the establishment of the new Canadian War Museum. With its dramatic architecture and exhibits designed to help new generations understand the significance of our nation's military history, it stands as a lasting testament to the contribution made to world freedom by Canada. He has also applied his energy to helping visually impaired persons through his active involvement with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the Sir Arthur Pearson Association of War Blind Scholarship Fund. His selflessness and perseverance are an inspiration to all Canadians.
