OTTAWA, October 14, 2008 – The public warning issued on October 10, 2008 has been updated to include additional distribution information.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume no name brand all-purpose flour because the product may contain excessively high levels of folic acid, iron, niacin, riboflavin and thiamine.
The affected product, no name brand all-purpose flour, is sold in 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) bags bearing lot codes beginning with 125J and UPC 0 60383 01375 2.
This product has only been distributed in Ontario to the following stores: No Frills, Cash and Carry, Freshmart, Fortinos, Zehrs, Real Canadian Superstore, Loblaws, Independents, Valu-Mart and Your Independent Grocer. If the lot code is not evident, consumers are advised to check with their retailer to determine if they have the affected product.
There have been 4 reported reactions associated with the consumption of this product.
The flour has a normal light beige colour when dry, but may turn yellow-orange when mixed with water. Based on normal levels of consumption for products made from this flour (such as bread), symptoms of flushing of the skin (red colour, warm feeling and/or itching), as well as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea could be experienced from the iron and niacin. Consumers are advised not to consume the flour or any products made with the flour, regardless of the quantity used. Consumers are advised to consult their physician if they have medical concerns.
The manufacturer, Prairie Flour Mills Ltd., Elie, Manitoba, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
