No. 226
The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today released the following statement further updating the situation following the series of terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India:
"I want to reassure Canadians that our government, in collaboration with officials in Mumbai and the Indian authorities, are doing everything in our power to protect and secure Canadians in Mumbai.
"Consular staff in New Delhi and in Mumbai are working to contact all registered Canadians in Mumbai. Given that many Canadians are not registered, consular staff are requesting that wardens follow up with any Canadians they know to be in Mumbai.
"The travel advisory for India has been updated to recommend that Canadians avoid all non-essential travel to Mumbai.
"The Operations Centre in Ottawa has received a steady flow of calls since these incidents occurred and is following up on all enquiries regarding the well-being of Canadians in Mumbai.
"We have been able to confirm that two Canadians have been injured in these attacks. Because of privacy considerations, no other information can be released at this time.
"Consular Officials in Mumbai and Ottawa are providing all possible assistance to the victims and their families.
"The Consulate of Canada in Mumbai continues to closely monitor the situation."
