Newmarket, ON – The 2008 Air Canada/RCMPChild Recovery Award was presented to Detective Sandra Staley, York Regional Police. Detective Staley was the lead investigator in an incident involving the abduction of a young child.
"Detective Staley demonstrated a level of dedication and excellence during the course of this investigation that led to the successful recovery of the child," said RCMP Staff Sergeant Roger Martin. "Her leadership and commitment to this investigation are the qualities that we want to recognize with this award."
In April 2008, a twenty-two month old child was removed from a Family Services Office located in Thornhill, Ontario. The child became a ward of the Family Services. During a visit by the biological mother, the child and mother went missing. Detective Staley was assigned to the case and after a number of days her perseverance and dedication led her to an address in Orangeville, Ontario where the young child was found safe and sound.
The biological mother was subsequently charged with Abduction in Contravention of a Court Order, Section 282, of the Criminal Code of Canada.
"The child's safety and security were always the most important thing for Detective Staley,"said Steve Beisswanger, Air Canada Director - Provincial and Community Relations. "Although there were many hurdles, she didn't let them stop her from rescuing this child from a dangerous situation."
Detective Staley will receive a round trip ticket for two from Air Canada which she will be donating to the Children's Wish Foundation.
