No. 247
The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1850 supporting the Middle East peace process:
"Canada welcomes the adoption today of Resolution 1850 at the United Nations Security Council in support of the Middle East peace process. We fully endorse the irreversibility of the process launched at Annapolis last year and we offer our complete support to the parties in reaching their goal of a comprehensive two-state solution.
"Canada commends Council members for their steadfastness in adopting this resolution. This resolution reflects the international community's commitment to do all that is necessary for peace in the Middle East. We also commend the determination of both Israeli and Palestinian leaders to continue pursuing peace through direct, bilateral negotiations.
"Canada supports all efforts, including the Arab Peace Initiative, to enhance peace in the region and sees this resolution as a positive step toward that goal."
