Ottawa - December 9, 2008 - The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) today unveiled a new information campaign aimed to better inform air travellers about being prepared when passing through a security checkpoint at Canadian airports. The campaign will begin to be rolled out in advance of one of the busiest travel period of the year.
"Our job is to deliver effective and efficient security. CATSA is working to more effectively target its efforts to communicate with passengers before they make their way to the airport. If we all follow the rules the screening process takes less time for everyone," said Kevin McGarr, CATSA President and Chief Executive Officer.
This new approach is based on an extensive survey on the perceptions and understanding of pre-board screening restrictions. CATSA interviewed nearly 6,000 Canadian travellers in intercept and telephone surveys between June and December 2008.
Key Findings:
- CATSA found out that, during a typical day, 10 % of travellers surrender an item at the security checkpoint.
- As many as 42% of passengers are uncertain about the nature of the restrictions.
The survey results led CATSA to develop new communications initiatives to increase the understanding of the restrictions and help improve the flow of screening lines.
What are the rules on liquids gels and aerosols at pre board screening?
Liquids, gels and aerosol in containers larger than 100 ml must be stored in checked baggage. Containers smaller than 100 ml are allowed in carry-on bags, provided they are placed in 1-litre resealable plastic bag. One bag per passenger.
CATSA, established on April 1, 2002, is a federal Crown corporation that operates on a not-for-profit basis. It is responsible for the provision of key aviation security services such as pre-board screening of passengers and their belongings; random screening of non-passengers; and the acquisition, deployment and maintenance of explosives detection equipment at airports. CATSA is also responsible for the development and implementation of a restricted area identity card incorporating biometric features.
