Gatineau, Quebec, December 9, 2008 – Public Works and Government Services Canada wishes to advise all motorists and pedestrians that the Chaudière Crossing will be partially reopened to passenger cars and pedestrians at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning, December 10.
Based on recent engineering analyses and recommendations, it was determined that two lanes will be opened, one for each direction. Signage will be installed at both entrances to direct traffic flow. The following restrictions will apply:
- Speed limit has been reduced to 40 km/h.
- Load limit has been established at 5 metric tons per vehicle.
- Trucks over the load limit must use the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge.
- Buses that are over the load limit will use alternate routes.
Safety is a top priority for Public Works and Government Services Canada and we are committed to ensuring the continued integrity of the bridges we manage. Consequently, the above traffic restrictions will remain in place until further notice.
Furthermore, PWGSC will continue masonry repairs and maintenance work to the arches; conduct regular visual inspections; and install monitoring equipment.
