REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN, December 16, 2008-Nine new projects will help 217 Canadians with disabilities throughout Saskatchewan be better prepared to find meaningful employment or become self-employed. Mr. Andrew Scheer, Member of Parliament for Regina–Qu'Appelle, made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today at the office of the Saskatchewan Abilities Council.
"All Canadians should have a chance to be active participants in the labour market," said Mr. Scheer. "This government is pleased to announce our investment in these projects that will help Canadians with disabilities prepare for, obtain and maintain meaningful employment."
The nine projects announced today share the common goal of helping individuals with disabilities gain the skills they need to contribute to the Canadian economy. Activities to increase participants' employability include pre-employment skills enhancement, job search techniques, trade-related workshops, job coach support and employment experience opportunities.
"The Saskatchewan Abilities Council delivers enhanced employment support services in Saskatoon, Regina, Swift Current and Yorkton," said Mr. Ian Wilkinson, Executive Director of the Council. "Our projects play a significant role in helping individuals enhance their independence and participation in the community by increasing their vocational skills and abilities. Through this funding, seven Council employees provide supported employment services to over 200 individuals with disabilities, with the ultimate goal of helping them achieve their full employment potential."
The Government of Canada supports these initiatives through the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities. This fund helps Canadians with disabilities by working in partnership with organizations, including those from the private sector. The Fund supports an array of activities such as increasing employability skills, providing work experience, and preparing individuals for self-employment. It also supports a wide range of employment activities for unemployed people with disabilities who are not normally eligible for Employment Insurance benefits under the Employment Insurance Act.
