OTTAWA, ONTARIO, December 5, 2008 - The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today applauded the creation of The Accessible Channel, the first ever Canadian TV channel for the visually impaired.
"Our government is working towards creating greater opportunities for all Canadians, including Canadians with disabilities," said Minister Finley. "We applaud all efforts, whether from the public or private sector, to improve accessibility. Television is an important source of entertainment and information. The creation of this channel means that more Canadians with disabilities will be able to enjoy a broadcast medium so many of us take for granted."
On December 3, the Minister also marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities-a day proclaimed by the United Nations in 1992 that helps promote and support the rights and issues of people with disabilities globally. This year's theme is "Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Dignity and justice for all of us."
