OTTAWA, ONTARIO, December 3, 2008 - The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today recognized the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by delivering the keynote address at Independent Living Canada's national celebration and reception. The event was held in Ottawa at the Canadian War Museum's Barney Danson Theatre.
"Our government, Canada's Government, is working towards creating greater opportunities for all Canadians, including Canadians with disabilities," said Minister Finley. "Through our hard work and dedication, we are helping build a country that is accessible for everyone."
In recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, today Minister Finley released the 2008 Federal Disability Report, Advancing the Inclusion of People with Disabilities.
Independent Living Canada is a national not-for-profit association of independent living centres run by and for people with disabilities that promotes the independent living philosophy. The organization supports the development of independent living centres, and provides education and leadership for their member organizations, partners and communities.
The observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, proclaimed by the United Nations in 1992, helps to promote and support the rights and issues of people with disabilities globally. This year's theme is "Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Dignity and justice for all of us." Today also marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
