RIVER JOHN, N.S. – Residents of Skinners Cove and Cribbons Point, NS will be receiving safer, more modern wharf and breakwater infrastructure, Defence Minister Peter MacKay announced today.
"If you work in the fisheries, you deserve safe, modern infrastructure to help you do your job," said Mr. MacKay who made the announcement on behalf of Fisheries Minister Gail Shea. "Nowhere is this more true than in our small craft harbours like Skinners Cove and Cribbons Point."
Mr. MacKay confirmed that preliminary planning and work will take place for a future wharf reconstruction project at Skinners Cove and breakwater repairs at Cribbons Point. Design work for both projects is expected to be completed by March 2009.
The Government of Canada continues to invest in small craft harbours throughout the country. Since February 2006, the permanent annual funding for the Small Craft Harbours Program has been increased by $20 million, with a further $10 million to come for repairs and environmental cleanup at recreational and non-core fishing harbours
