OTTAWA – The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today issued the following statement:
I would like to thank NS Fisheries Minister Ron Chisholm, NB Minister of Fisheries Rick Doucet and PEI Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Rural Development Allan Campbell for meeting with me today to discuss the important market issues facing the lobster fishery. Lobster prices are unusually low this year as the economy has had a severe negative effect on all seafood markets and prices, starting with lobster.
The price of lobster is determined by domestic and international markets. We have committed to identify options and actions that would help meet the challenges before us.
Together with the provinces, industry and harvesters, we will work together to help coastal communities through these challenging times.
