The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, released the following statement today to mark the 35th anniversary of Canada-Mongolia diplomatic relations:
"This week marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Canada and Mongolia. Our relationship, built over time on a strong foundation of common values and interests, has come a long way since 1973. It continues to grow.
"Beyond our similar climates, landscapes and resource endowments, we share a fundamental commitment to the values of a free, open and tolerant society governed by democratic institutions and the rule of law. We have often made common cause, for example our collaboration at the United Nations and in other multilateral forums, our joint support for rebuilding Afghanistan's armed forces, and our commitment to implementing the Ottawa Convention on anti-personnel mines.
"Canada has also supported Mongolia's sustainable economic development as it seeks to tap its enormous mineral and energy reserves. With nearly $500 million in direct investment, the Canadian private sector is the second-largest investor in Mongolia. Canadian firms are critical partners in ensuring that the development of Mongolia's extractive sector follows international best practices on environmental management, community engagement and poverty alleviation.
"The arrival of Canada's first resident ambassador, Anna Biolik, in September this year demonstrates Canada's commitment to advancing our relations with Mongolia, key regional partner. I look forward to working with my Mongolian counterpart to identify new areas for cooperation and to fulfill the great potential of this relationship."
