Sudbury, ON, December 2008 – MIRARCO is proud to announce it has been selected to host the 13th U.S./North American Mine Ventilation Symposium in 2010. The planning committee announced their decision at this year's symposium in Reno, Nevada. The symposium will be co-organized by Natural Resources Canada's CANMET Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories.
"It's an honour to be hosting this symposium," said Dale McKinnon, MIRARCO's Clean Air Engineering Program Manager and symposium organizer. "We want to congratulate the University of Nevada for a successfully organized conference in 2008; we to hope organize one of equal calibre at Laurentian University."
"This forum will provide an excellent opportunity for information sharing, and will contribute to the development of innovative solutions to the challenges facing mining countries around the world," said the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources. "Our Government is committed to working with our domestic and international partners to address issues of critical importance to the long-term sustainability of the mining industry."
The symposium is a gathering of professionals, suppliers, academics along with industrial and government representatives that aims to share knowledge and studies about the underground mine environment. This is one of few such conferences worldwide and will attract international experts in the field of underground mine ventilation.
Roughly 200 to 300 people will visit Sudbury in 2010 to partake in the symposium. Participants will take tours of mines, undertake short courses and hear about world class mine ventilation research on such subjects as cooling, controlling diesel emissions and automating mine ventilation, all of which are pertinent to our Canadian mining sector.
This is only the second time the Mine Ventilation Symposium is to be held in Canada. It was last hosted in 2002 by Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.
"As the world's largest integrated mining complex, Sudbury is the perfect place for this conference to be held, we're looking forward to 2010," said McKinnon.
Today marks the launch of the symposium's official website at www.mirarco.org/minevent .
