MONCTON, N.B. - Women in the Greater Moncton area and throughout New Brunswick will be empowered to leave situations of violence and gain greater access to employment opportunities and improved economic security, thanks to help from the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), today announced support for three projects that will benefit women victims of violence in six French-speaking rural regions, low-income mothers in rural New Brunswick, and francophone women from ethnocultural minority communities in the Greater Moncton area.
"Our Government is continuing to deliver on our commitment to equality for Canadian women," said Minister Guergis. "By supporting projects that give women the tools they need to empower themselves, access employment, strengthen their economic security and take on the challenge of leadership, we are making a real difference in the lives of Canadians."
"This announcement reflects our government's commitment to address the needs of New Brunswick women and to work with women's organizations to achieve real results," said the Honourable Gregory Francis Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Member of Parliament for New Brunswick Southwest.
Three organizations will receive a total of $799,243 in funding from the Women's Community Fund of the Women's Program of Status of Women Canada. This Fund supports eligible organizations to carry out projects at the local, regional and national levels. To qualify, the initiatives must work toward the equality and full participation of women in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.
The following three organizations will receive funding:
- Support to Single Parents Inc./Support aux parents uniques inc. will receive $300,000 for its project entitled Building Sustainable Livelihoods for Low-Income Women through Co-operative Enterprise Development.
- The Collectivité ingénieuse de la Péninsule acadienne (CIPA) inc. of Paquetville, will receive $299,243 for its project entitled ParCelles, a web package of community products to support women who are victims of violence.
- The Collectif des femmes du Nouveau-Brunswick will receive $200,000 for its project entitled Modèle d'intégration professionnelle pour les femmes francophones issues des communautés ethnoculturelles dans la région de Moncton.
"This support will make such a difference for single parents and their families across the Greater Moncton area," said Ms. Nancy Hartling, Executive Director of Support to Single Parents Inc./Support aux parents uniques inc. "It enables us to provide support, training and mentoring to low-income women to help them build assets and sustainable livelihoods through a range of resources, such as co-op development, business training, workshops on budgeting, financial and computer literacy, management, governance, and the mentorship and coaching of successful businesswomen in our community."
As announced in Budget 2008, the Government of Canada will develop an Action Plan to advance equality for women by improving their economic and social conditions, and their participation in democratic life.
