OTTAWA — Canada's Transport Minister, John Baird, today announced that WestJet Airlines Ltd. has been designated to operate scheduled international air services between Ottawa and Cancun, Mexico.
"The Government of Canada's designation of this Canadian airline will provide more choice for travellers, create new jobs and boost our economy," said Minister Baird. "It is proof of the excellent working relationship between Canada and Mexico and also gives more economic flexibility to consumers."
Under the provisions of Canada's international air transportation policy, all Canadian air carriers may apply to the Minister for designation to operate scheduled international air services. These designations strengthen Canada's competitive position in the air transportation industry by giving Canadian airlines and airports greater access to international markets.
The 1961 Canada-Mexico bilateral Air Transport Agreement, as amended in 1999 and 2007, governs scheduled air services between the two countries.
