GANDER, NL - On December 16, 2008, the provincial court at Gander convicted Robert Harnett of Seldom, Fogo Island, with illegally processing fish at sea.
Mr. Harnett was fined $1,000 for having cod fish in his possession that was cut in such a manner that the weight of the fish could not be readily determined. His catch was forfeited.
In September 2008 DFO fishery officers from the Twillingate detachment were conducting a routine patrol in the Seldom area when they checked a vessel being operated by Mr. Harnett.
Under federal fisheries regulations, all caught fish must be retained while at sea in a form that allows them to clearly identified, weighed and counted.
DFO is committed to the conservation and protection of marine resources in Newfoundland and Labrador. Anyone wishing to report suspicious fishing activities may do so by contacting their nearest DFO office or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
