SAINT-HUBERT, Quebec, February 9, 2009 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), today visited CSA headquarters in Saint-Hubert to observe some prototype space explorers and to reaffirm the government's commitment to the CSA.
“Our government is committed to keeping Canada ahead of the game in expertise and leadership in space robotics. We're building on Canada's successful flight heritage, and all Canadians can be proud of that,”said Minister Clement. “We're working to make sure Canada remains a key player in international space exploration missions.”
Overall, Budget 2009 provides significant new investments towards science and technology initiatives, reflecting the Government of Canada's commitment to building a competitive advantage based on excellence in science and technology. These investments create jobs for researchers and help bring about innovative ideas that generate economic activity in their own right.
Established in 1989, the CSA coordinates all civil, space-related policies and programs on behalf of the Government of Canada. The Agency directs its resources and activities through four key thrusts: earth observation, space science and exploration, satellite communications, and space awareness and learning. By leveraging international cooperation, the CSA generates world-class scientific research and industrial development for the benefit of Canadians.
In Canada's Economic Action Plan, our government committed $110 million over three years to the CSA for the advancement of its research and the development of space robotics.
