OTTAWA, February 12, 2009 – The Honourable Nancy Greene Raine, Senator, represented the Government of Canada today at celebrations on Parliament Hill to mark the One-Year Countdown to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
"Our Government is a strong supporter of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games," said Senator Raine. "As a Canadian Olympian, I am proud to be a part of celebrations like the One-Year Countdown to back our Canadian athletes and to share the Olympic dream with Canadians."
With 365 days to go until the opening of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler, activities were held around the country and the world to share in the excitement and build-up to the Games. In Ottawa, the festivities included unveiling of the 2010 Olympic Torch, appearances by the 2010 mascots, presentations by our Canadian Olympic athletes, and outdoor events for children hosted by the Governor General.
On Parliament Hill, the Olympic flag was raised on the guest flagpole, where it will wave for the coming year to highlight Canada's support for our athletes as they journey toward Olympic gold.
