GRAND FALLS, New Brunswick, February 12, 2009 - Residents and visitors to the Grand Falls area of New Brunswick will have an opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities at the 2009 Grand Falls Winter Carnival, thanks in part to funding from the Government of Canada.
On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Mike Allen, Member of Parliament (Tobique-Mactaquac), today announced funding for the Winter Carnival Committee, which will help organize this year's Winter Carnival, to be held from February 12 to 15.
The event includes ice and snow sculpting, sport tournaments, sleigh rides, a pancake breakfast, local performances, Flag Day celebrations, and a Valentine's Day dance, as well as the rebuilding of the world's largest ice igloo.
"Our Government is pleased to support the 2009 Winter Carnival in the Municipality of Grand Falls," said Minister Moore. "We are proud to partner with communities to support activities that promote local arts and heritage and contribute to the local economy."
"I am proud that our Government has taken decisive steps to strengthen our shared sense of heritage," said Mr. Allen. "Celebrations like the Winter Carnival bring people of all ages and backgrounds together and help build stronger communities."
Funding of $3,800 is provided through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, which provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in events and activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. Grand Fall's Winter Carnival will attract many visitors to the region. This increase in tourism will stimulate the local economy and encourage people to make Grand Fall's Winter Carnival an annual destination.
