FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK, February 19, 2009-Seven communities in New Brunswick will gain access to literacy and essential skills training that addresses the needs of their different cultural groups. The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
"Our government's investment in this Literacy Coalition project will help newcomers to Canada get jobs and participate more fully in their communities," stated Minister of State Ashfield. ""Helping people get the training and skills they need is a key part of Canada's Economic Action Plan."
Newcomers to Canada in seven New Brunswick communities will benefit from $172,969 in federal government funding through the Building Capacity for Family Literacy project.
As part of the project, the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick will assess existing family literacy program materials and tailor them to meet the needs of different cultural groups with low levels of literacy and essential skills in English. Strengthening literacy and essential skills in one area of an individual's life has a positive impact on all areas.
The Government of Canada works with its partners to ensure that Canadians have the literacy and essential skills they need to take advantage of opportunities and build better futures. Literacy and essential skills programs and activities across Canada are supported by the federal, provincial and territorial governments, and by a variety of businesses and voluntary organizations.
