PETERBOROUGH, ONTARIO, February 26, 2009-Canadians with low levels of literacy and essential skills will benefit from a project that is supported by the Government of Canada. Mr. Dean Del Mastro, Member of Parliament for Peterborough, made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
"Our government is working with partners across the country to ensure that Canadians have the literacy and essential skills they need to build better futures," said Mr. Del Mastro. "Our government's investment in this Literacy Ontario Central South project will help workers improve their literacy and essential skills through an occupation-based program."
Under the project entitled Literacy and Essential Skills in Industrial Arts, Literacy Ontario Central South received $311,925 to develop essential skills course material in industrial arts for use by instructors and participants in the program. The project will enhance learning opportunities for learners who struggle with traditional occupations, such as industrial arts like blacksmithing, ceramics and welding. Results from the project will be shared through a series of presentations that will be delivered to organizations across Canada. Upgrading the literacy and essential skills of Canadian workers is also of benefit to employers.
"In today's environment, it is more important than ever that Canadians develop the skills they will need to participate and succeed in the job market," said Mr. Del Mastro. "The government underscored this commitment in January when it introduced Canada's Economic Action Plan. A key component of the plan is to create more and better opportunities for Canadian workers through skills development."
Literacy and essential skills are the foundation for lifelong learning and play a vital role in the development of healthy families, vibrant communities and a prosperous economy. Literacy and essential skills programs and activities across Canada are supported by the federal, provincial and territorial governments, and by a variety of businesses and voluntary organizations.
