New Glasgow, Nova Scotia
Thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada, a local not-for-profit organization will find more business to provide meaningful work for residents with intellectual disabilities in Pictou County. The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, today announced $10,000 in funding through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) to help the Summer Street Industries Society (SSI) increase sales by developing a new marketing plan.
“This investment will increase the self-sufficiency of Summer Street Industries,” said Minister MacKay. “Having an effective brand will allow the Society to attract new business, which will provide new working opportunities for local residents.”
This project will allow Summer Street to hire a consultant who will review current marketing methods and create a comprehensive brand development program to effectively promote its various business units. Increasing market identity will help the organization to continue to dedicate itself to assisting intellectually challenged adults in becoming members of the workforce.
In addition to ACOA’s investment, the Province of Nova Scotia is contributing $10,000 to the project through Nova Scotia Economic and Rural Development, and Summer Street Industries is contributing $5,000 towards the project.
“Identifying new avenues for career paths is key to helping people find jobs in their communities,” said Economic and Rural Development Minister Murray Scott. “This investment will help Summer Street Industries increase employment opportunities for its clients.”
ACOA’s investment is being made through the Innovative Communities Fund, which focuses on investments that lead to long-term employment and economic capacity building in rural communities.
