Long Term Stabilization of Historic Assets

This project involves the stabilization of selected historic assets within the Fort McNab property on McNab's Island. Assets will be selected for stabilization based on providing safe unguided public access. With the long-term stabilization of Fort McNab National Historic Site, Parks Canada is ensuring the protection of this significant resource for visitors to McNab's Island.
The work at Fort McNab National Historic Site will enable Parks Canada to offer visitors and residents alike an opportunity to explore and learn about the significance of Fort McNab in this unique island setting in the Halifax Harbour.

The Northfront Counterscarp wall project involves the stabilization of approximately 370 m of the counterscarp wall and associated musketry gallery. The work will include significant masonry repair to the walls and arches as well as drainage improvements in this area of the ditch.
The project involves limited masonry repairs to the South Magazine structure and the replacement of the slate shingle roofing. The new roof will provide continuing protection for the overall structure and the interpretive exhibit it houses.
Port Royal National Historic Site
Installation of Sprinkler System
$700,000
The project involves the installation of a dry sprinkler system with detection, monitoring/alarm, emergency back-up power, underground reservoir and mechanical room. A new building to house a diesel generator will be constructed adjacent to the existing workshop.
The Port-Royal Habitation is a reconstruction of one of the earliest European settlements on the continent and is key in communicating the story of French settlement. Protecting and preserving this site for future generations will ensure the communication of these messages.
Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site
Replacement of roof and Exhibits
$3,000,000
This project provides for the replacement of the roof and the addition of new exhibits to celebrate the Silver Dart at Alexander Graham Bell Museum.
Cape Breton Highlands National Park
Cabot Trail Restoration
$14,000,000
This project will see the Cabot Trail in the areas of Ingonish, Middle Head, and Warren Lake to South Mountain repaved. This investment will improve public safety and the driving surface quality on Cabot Trail from Ingonish through South Mountain. This will include widening of the shoulder area to accommodate cyclists and hikers.
Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site
Renewal of Visitor Experience Facilities
$2,000,000
This project will see structural repairs to buildings at Fortress of Louisboug National Historic Site which will protect valuable cultural resources. It will also see the development of facilities to enhance visitor experience at Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site.
