Ottawa, Ontario (March 25, 2009) - A new school will benefit Opaskwayak Cree Nation, thanks to the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
The Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced construction of a new high school, in partnership with the First Nation.
"First Nations children deserve to have the best possible facilities in which they can thrive,"said Minister Toews. "The construction of the new high school for Opaskwayak will provide a safe, healthy learning environment for First Nation students to grow and reach for their dreams."
This project is part of the $200 million for new schools and major renovations included in the $1.4 billion investment for Aboriginal peoples under Canada's Economic Action Plan. The new school will have 17 classrooms. It can hold up to 431 grade 7-12 students on-reserve. The school will have many resources, including a-multi-purpose room, library resource centre, and science and computer rooms.
The Government of Canada is taking action to improve the lives of First Nations and stimulate economic growth in First Nation communities through targeted investments in infrastructure. Support for school infrastructure projects such as this one will help ensure First Nation students have a strong and productive educational experience, which starts with access to quality infrastructure that is conducive to learning.
Project costs will be identified following the competitive tendering process.
