Ottawa, Ontario (March 17, 2009) - A new school will benefit school-aged children of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, thanks to the Government of
Canada's Economic Action Plan .
Larry Miller, Member of Parliament for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced construction of a new elementary school, in partnership with the First Nation, to replace its current facility.
Our government understands the important role a school plays in harnessing the potential of young minds, said Mr. Miller. Each lesson taught at school presents the opportunity for our youth to deepen their understanding, to extend their thinking, and to share their knowledge.
This project is part of the $200 million for new schools and major renovations included in the $1.4 billion investment for Aboriginal peoples under Canadas Economic Action Plan. It will include a new 2,350 m2 facility, complete with play areas, soccer field, track, and basketball court.
Today marks a new beginning for our communitys future generations, said Chief Ralph Akiwenzie. They will grow through sharing, learning, and we will learn from this generation as well. Today, we are truly shaping tomorrow.
The Government of Canada is taking action to improve the lives of First Nations and stimulate economic growth in First Nation communities through targeted investments in infrastructure. Support for school infrastructure projects such as this one will help ensure First Nation students have a strong and productive educational experience, which starts with access to quality infrastructure that is conducive to learning.
Project costs will be identified following the competitive tendering process.
