KEGASKA — The Kegaska wharf will be rebuilt this year. The contract award was announced today by the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, on behalf of the federal Minister of Transport, John Baird.
"Through this investment, the Government of Canada is improving the safety of all users of the wharf and helping to create jobs," said Minister Lebel. "The Kegaska wharf is a crucial piece of infrastructure for the community; this work will contribute to the village’s continued socio-economic development."
The project, to cost $6,883,475, will primarily consist of the reconstruction of the wharf using sheet piles located along the periphery of the existing wharf. The work will also include the installation of a cathodic protection system, fenders, lighting, mooring bollards, ladders and wheelguards. The contract was awarded to EBC Inc. of Quebec City. Work will begin in May and be completed in December 2009.
The Kegaska wharf, which qualifies as a remote port under the National Marine Policy, is used mainly to resupply local residents on a weekly basis and for shipping and receiving goods and seafood products. The wharf’s structure also protects nearby facilities belonging to Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Relais Nordik Inc. provides ferry services to villages on the Lower North Shore, and Kegaska is a weekly port of call.
