OTTAWA, ONTARIO, March 10, 2009-The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today met with provincial regulators and national associations of regulators to express the federal government's continued support of and confidence in Canada's ability to remove barriers to investment and trade and to ensure full labour mobility for all Canadian workers by April 1, 2009.
"A lot has been accomplished in the last few months, and I commend our territorial, provincial and regulatory partners for taking action to ensure that all Canadian workers have the freedom to work in their chosen occupation anywhere in Canada," said Minister Finley. "Our government will continue to build on the progress made to date, and will identify opportunities for all levels of government to move forward together on this issue."
Canada's Economic Action Plan demonstrates the Government's commitment to do what it takes to help Canadians weather current economic conditions. The Plan reinforces the fact that the Government places a premium on ensuring that Canadians have the tools they need to succeed.
"Removing barriers to labour mobility will help improve workers' employment opportunities, as well as give employers access to a larger and richer pool of human resources," said Minister Finley. "Encouraging the recognition of qualifications and certifications across Canada benefits workers and employers alike; workers have a wider range of opportunities and employers have a broader selection of candidates, all of which is important in these changing economic conditions."
Full labour mobility applies to internationally trained workers as well as Canadian‑trained workers. Improving the labour market integration of internationally trained workers is another key commitment of the Government of Canada. The Government is taking action on this commitment by working with partners and stakeholders to break down the barriers to integration-including difficulties with foreign credential recognition-to position Canada as a destination of choice for newcomers.
