SAINT-GEORGES-DE-BEAUCE, Quebec, March 20, 2009 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Member of Parliament (Beauce), today announced funding for two arts promoters from the Beauce region. The support to Les Amants de la scène will enable the promoter to present more than 60 performances in various performance venues in Saint-Georges-de-Beauce. Ovascène will receive funding enabling it to produce more than 25 events in Sainte-Marie.
"Thanks to such direct support to our communities and to our artists and cultural industries, our Government is using culture as a means to ensure the social and economic vitality of Canadian communities," said Minister Moore. "These investments are concrete examples. I would like to wish everyone a great 2009-2010 season."
"The message from our Government is clear: the cultural sector contributes immensely to stimulating and strengthening our economy," added Mr. Bernier. "The activities offered by Les Amants de la scène and Ovascène will not only help strengthen the economy, but also enhance our cultural identity."
"The support of the Government of Canada is necessary to the development of performing arts in Beauce-Sud," said Jean-François Bernatchez, Executive Director of Les Amants de la Scène. "Its contribution will make it possible for the organization to develop its audience and let them learn more about performing arts."
"Ovascène is very pleased to be able to count upon the financial support of the Government of Canada with respect to its artistic seasons," said André Lambert, CEO of Ovascène. "Thanks to this support, we have integrated Canadian artists into our programming, including Leahy, Glamour Puss, Ron Korb, Michael Kaschammer, John Campbelljohn, Garrett Mason, and Harry Manx. These are all exceptional groups and musicians, and our patrons will always remember their performances."
For more than 20 years, these two organizations have been presenting professional performances while promoting multiple disciplines and cultural awareness. Each organization boasts multifaceted programming that features performances in song, theatre, comedy, dance, and storytelling. In addition to traditional performances, educational activities are organized for people of all ages in the community. The artists performing or participating in an educational activity come from Quebec and elsewhere in Canada.
Total funding for the two arts promoters is $42,500. Les Amants de la scène will receive $22,500 and Ovascène will receive $20,000. The Government of Canada has provided this funding through the Arts Presentation Canada Program of Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentation of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
