OTTAWA, March 11, 2009 — Today, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, issued the following statement pursuant to the Canadian Auto Workers' (CAW's) ratification of a new agreement with General Motors of Canada Ltd. (GM Canada).
“The Government of Canada acknowledges the CAW's agreement with GM Canada as a further step in the restructuring of the automotive industry. This is a time for all stakeholders to work together and, frankly, to give a little in the interest of keeping a sustainable industry in Canada.
“My officials and I continue to work closely with GM Canada as we continue our due diligence. We will ensure that there is a viable long-term sustainability plan involving all stakeholders in place before we commit any taxpayer dollars.”
