OTTAWA, March 8, 2009 — Today, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, issued the following statement:
"I am encouraged that General Motors (GM) and the Canadian Auto Workers have reached a tentative agreement. These negotiations show that stakeholders realize how serious the auto industry situation is, and how important it is for everyone to come to the table and negotiate in good faith in order to fundamentally restructure the company.
"My officials and I continue to work closely with GM as we continue our due diligence. We will ensure that there is a viable long-term sustainability plan involving all stakeholders in place before we commit any taxpayer dollars."
