Ottawa, March 24, 2009 - The Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts recognize the contribution Canadian visual and media artists make to our society. Through the vast array of their work, these outstanding artists provide an important lens through which Canadians are able to see themselves.
The Awards are the highest honour given for excellence in fine arts, applied arts, independent film and video, or audio and new media. They are presented each year to noteworthy artists in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the visual and media arts in Canada throughout their productive careers. This year, the recipients of the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts are:
- John Greer, sculptor (LaHave, Nova Scotia);
- Nobuo Kubota, installation/performance (Toronto, Ontario);
- Rita Lynn McKeough, installation/performance (Calgary, Alberta);
- Gordon Smith, painter (West Vancouver, British Columbia);
- Robert Morin, director and filmmaker (Montréal, Quebec);
- Raymond Moriyama, architect, (Toronto, Ontario);
- Kim Ondaatje (Verona, Ontario) and Tony Urquhart (Stratford, Ontario); and
- Kevin Lockau, glass (Bancroft, Ontario) -- Saidye Bronfman Award.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate this year's award recipients. As well, I commend the Canada Council for the Arts on creating these awards, which recognize our greatest artists and their distinguished work.
