Saint-Léon-de-Standon, April 3, 2009 – Acting on behalf of Nathalie Normandeau, Deputy Premier of Quebec and Ministre des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l’Occupation du territoire, Dominique Vien, Ministre des Services gouvernementaux and Member of the National Assembly for Bellechasse, today joined Steven Blaney, Member of Parliament for Lévis-Bellechasse, acting on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, in announcing that the Municipality of Saint-Léon-de-Standon will receive an additional $197,632 in joint government funding, up from $235,686 to $433,318, under the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).
This funding increase is made necessary by certain modifications that had to be made to the project in order to improve the municipality’s community infrastructure.
The assistance will serve mainly for the installation of a chlorine disinfection system, telemetry system and monitoring and control equipment, as well as for the construction of a new washwater treatment and drainage system. The project also calls for various modifications to be made to the drinking water reservoir. Directly benefiting some 680 local residents, these upgrades will enable the municipality to improve the quality of its drinking water while more effectively monitoring and managing the water delivery system.
Completion of this project will necessitate a total eligible investment of $866,636 under component 1 of the MRIF. The Government of Quebec and Government of Canada will each contribute $216,659 toward this work, for a new total of $433,318 in combined government funding, while the Municipality of Saint-Léon-de-Standon will also assume $433,318 of the project’s costs.
The Mayor of Saint-Léon-de-Standon, Bernard Morin, said he is delighted to see this project move forward in that it is considered a key priority for the development of his municipality and the well-being of local residents.
The Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund is a cost-sharing initiative of the Government of Quebec and Government of Canada that makes $470 million in funding available to Quebec municipalities and non-governmental organizations. With the financial participation of these municipalities and organizations, this initiative could result in the execution of more than $700 million in infrastructure work. The objectives of the MRIF are to improve community infrastructure, the quality of the environment and citizens’ quality of life, and to promote long-term economic growth.
The program, which is in force until March 31, 2010, is administered by Quebec’s Ministère des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l’Occupation du territoire. Canada Economic Development is responsible for delivering the federal portion of the MRIF on behalf of the Government of Canada.
