This investment of $18 million over the next four years in the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) advances the Government’s objective of strengthened engagement in the Americas by seeking to promote Canadian models of governance and commerce to foster more effective, accountable and transparent institutions and create environments more conducive to prosperity that will benefit Canadian interests.
It also builds on the Prime Minister’s 2007 visit to Chile and the Caribbean, during which he announced a ten-year, $17 million commitment to a scholarship program designed to strengthen partnerships and build human capital in the region.
The ELAP will further contribute to the Government’s hemispheric vision by extending this scholarship initiative to other priority countries in the Americas while strengthening the existing linkages between institutions in the region and Canada through increased cooperation and knowledge sharing.
