The Fundy Trail Parkway is a new scenic coastal link that, when completed, will connect Saint John, Sussex and Moncton, New Brunswick. The first phase of the parkway construction has already been completed, as well as much of the design and layout for the second phase, which will complete the connection into Fundy National Park.
On April 1, 2006, the Government of Canada contributed $5.5 million through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency to complete Phase II of the Fundy Trail Parkway project. This funding was used for the design and construction of critical parkway elements from the intersection of Old Salmon Road and Route 114 near the entrance to Fundy National Park, proceeding south and westward toward Seely Beach, Tufts Point and additional facilities.
On April 8, 2009 Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Premier Shawn Graham announced an additional investment involving construction of the connector road between Route 111 and Route 114 in southern New Brunswick with a total estimated cost of $10 million, covering approximately 11 km of road. The federal contribution is being made through the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund.
Federal financial support for these latest parkway improvements is conditional on the project meeting all applicable federal eligibility and approval requirements under the Building Canada plan, and on the Province of New Brunswick proposing the Trail as a priority in its Annual Capital Plan. Construction should begin and be completed during the current construction season.
