Quebec City, Quebec, April 4, 2009 – The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Minister for La Francophonie and minister responsible for Quebec City and Region, today announced that public consultations to develop an action plan for the rebuilding of the Quebec City Armoury will begin in May 2009.
"The Government of Canada made a commitment to support and realize the projects that the citizens of Quebec consider a priority for the future of the Armoury. Once again, we are keeping our promises and moving forward quickly," said Minister Verner. "The hiring of a consulting firm will ensure transparency in the consultation process and guarantee that the expectations of citizens and stakeholders are taken into account when planning the future of this unique site."
In Budget 2009, the Government of Canada earmarked $2 million for public consultations to develop a plan for the future of the Armoury. These monies will also allow business cases and environmental studies to be carried out.
Since April 2008, the Government of Canada has provided ongoing support for the investigation led by the Department of National Defence in collaboration with the Quebec City fire marshal. In addition, the government has acted to have the remains of the building protected and the site stabilized to avoid further deterioration.
Prior to the unfortunate fire, which significantly damaged this historic heritage site on Grande Allée near the gates of Old Quebec, the Armoury was home to the Voltigeurs de Québec and housed a museum devoted to this infantry regiment, raised in 1862 and the oldest French Canadian regiment still in existence.
