OTTAWA, April 7, 2009 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, P.C., Q.C., M.P., Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced $25,000 in federal funding to the Canadian Criminal Justice Association.
The funding will support the Canadian Criminal Justice Association in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Criminal Justice Association in hosting its 32nd Canadian Congress on Criminal Justice, in Halifax from October 28‑31, 2009.
The congress, "Problem Solving Justice", is designed to draw together practitioners and researchers from a wide variety of disciplines to discuss the unique needs of special populations and to consider the implications that their needs have on the justice system and the broader service delivery continuum.
"Our Government is committed to making our streets and communities safer," said Minister MacKay. "Through this contribution, we are assisting the Canadian Criminal Justice Association in promoting best practices in all aspects of criminal law, thereby strengthening the criminal justice system and contributing to the safety and well-being of all Canadians."
The Canadian Criminal Justice Association is an independent national voluntary organization working for an improved criminal justice system in Canada.
The investment highlighted today falls under the Justice Partnership and Innovation Program, administered by Department of Justice Canada, which supports activities that respond to the changing conditions affecting Canadian justice policy.
