Mathieu Archambault, a dynamic young man from Montréal, Quebec, became aware of the benefits of community involvement at a young age. He has taken part in over 300 volunteering events with Coup de pouce jeunesse, working with disadvantaged children, seniors and people with psychiatric disabilities. Now a scoutmaster, Mr. Archambault organizes camps and regular meetings for his troop. Known for his good humour, Mr. Archambault’s contributions have had a beneficial impact on countless youth.

Deborah Bennett, of Ottawa, Ontario, has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre through her dedicated and efficient management of the Centre’s gift boutique. Between co-ordinating the other volunteers, purchasing stock, planning the budget and filling shifts, she has given over 14 000 hours since 1992. Mrs. Bennett’s caring and commitment has improved the quality of life for all residents of the long-term care home.

For her part, Mrs. Bernier volunteers with a number of organizations, including the Association feminine d’éducation et d’action sociale, Mouvement Couples et Familles, the Centre d’accès Communautaire Internet and Le Chef-Lieu, a local news bulletin for community organizations. Whether they are working together or on separate projects, the Berniers embody dedication, generosity and a profound desire to reach out to those in need.

For over 15 years, Terry Boyd, of South Mountain, Ontario, has provided support and encouragement to the families of young girls with Rett syndrome. Mrs. Boyd’s commitments have included serving as the president of the Ontario Rett Syndrome Association, organizing its annual Mothers’ Retreats, initiating countless fundraising events and assisting in the planning of a Rett syndrome clinic at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Herself the mother of a daughter with Rett syndrome, Mrs. Boyd remains an inspiration in raising awareness of this severe neurological disorder.

Molly Bruce, of Ottawa, Ontario, has had an impact on many persons with disabilities and their families. For almost 30 years, she has run a support group for persons with disabilities. She is a former board member of both Family Alliance Ontario and the Ottawa chapter of the Autistic Society, and is the founder of the Bridge Research Foundation, through which she provides information on how to access services, equipment and treatments. Mrs. Bruce serves as a strong advocate and knowledgeable resource for persons with disabilities, and inspires all who witness her selfless efforts.
Nicholas Brunet, Clarence-Rockland, Ontario

A young man with integrity and dedication, Nicholas Brunet, of Clarence-Rockland, Ontario, is a role model for his fellow students. Mr. Brunet has selflessly spent his past three summers as a volunteer camp counsellor, ensuring the safety and well-being of a young disabled camper confined to a wheelchair. He is also very involved with his school and volunteers for a number of community initiatives such as the Terry Fox Run, the Snowsuit Fund for kids and the Rockland Food Drive. Distinguished by his maturity and sense of responsibility, Mr. Brunet continues to show his leadership in the community.
Claudia Ruth Campbell, Teulon, Manitoba

A pillar of the community of Teulon, Manitoba, Claudia Ruth Campbell has exhibited a tireless commitment to youth, the arts and her church. Mrs. Campbell is a perennial organizer of the annual Teulon Fair and is very active within her parish. In addition, she has been the director of the Teulon and District Agricultural Society since 1958, and has been a key organizer of the Rockwood Festival of the Arts since helping to found the annual event in 1956. Mrs. Campbell’s versatile and widespread generosity has greatly enriched the lives of her fellow citizens.

Carolyn L. Clancy and Audrey Darling, Ottawa, Ontario

Carolyn Clancy and Audrey Darling are founding members of the Ottawa Hospital – Civic Auxiliary, who have, since 1966, raised funds for the hospital. Ms. Clancy served on the Auxiliary board for 10 years, and is currently the gift shop’s assistant co-ordinator. Ms. Darling, currently the historian of the Auxiliary, has served as its president as well as co-ordinator of volunteers. The dedication of both Ms. Clancy and Ms. Darling has led to more comfortable hospital stays and improved care for thousands of patients.
James Cupido, Edmonton, Alberta

A talented artist and musician from Edmonton, Alberta, James Cupido’s compassion has improved the living conditions of many. Over the past 40 years, Mr. Cupido has made more than 500 donations of blood and blood products to Canadian Blood Services, while successfully lobbying to have the age restrictions removed for those who give blood. He volunteers his time to the Pilgrims Hospice, and has performed many soothing bedside violin recitals for patients at hospitals throughout Edmonton. Mr. Cupido has the natural ability to connect with ill patients and to bring comfort to others.
Mariette Dandeneau Lavallée, Saint-Damien, Quebec

Through her involvement with a number of organizations, Mariette Dandeneau Lavallée has given back to her community of Saint-Damien, Quebec, for more than 40 years. From 1967, Mrs. Dandeneau Lavallée has worked with the Artisanes de Saint-Damien, promoting the role of women in society and the preservation of cultural heritage. Throughout the 1970s, she worked with the municipal council to restore the recreational infrastructure of Saint-Damien. An outstanding organizer, she has also worked tirelessly to help alleviate poverty through the local Daughters of Isabella Circle, and to promote intergenerational interaction through a program that brings together seniors and school children. Mrs. Dandeneau Lavallée’s dedication is worthy of the highest praise.

For the past 25 years, Garnet and Mary Ellen Davis have been well known in their community of Melfort, Saskatchewan. Mrs. Davis is, similarly, a long-time member of the Melfort Lioness Club, and has also been on a number of boards of directors, including those of the Melfort Housing Authority and the Melfort Public Library. Both Mr. and Mrs. Davis exhibit a tireless commitment to helping the members of their community.

She is also a 20-year member of the North Crosby Recreation Committee and is actively involved with her local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Genevieve Follett and Frances Pearson, Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador

Exceptional women and volunteers, Genevieve Follett and Frances Pearson have dedicated countless hours to helping seniors in the small community of Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador. Mrs. Follett and Mrs. Pearson have devoted 15 and 20 years respectively to the Placentia Health Centre, attending to the needs of its elders. Mrs. Pearson volunteers on a daily basis at the Centre, assisting in nearly all conceivable capacities, while Mrs. Follet, herself a frequent volunteer at the Centre, is also a 21-year member of the Star of the Sea Association’s Ladies Auxiliary. Highly respected by residents, visiting families and staff, both recipients bring much-appreciated smiles and energy to the Centre.
Raymond E. Glover, Delta, British Columbia

Blind since 1984, Raymond Glover lives as he always has: by going the extra mile to assist the citizens of Delta, British Columbia. Mr. Glover admirably supports veterans’ causes through his involvement with the British Columbia Regiment Association, namely through the establishment of scholarships on behalf of the Association, meal deliveries to seniors, and fundraising events, such as the annual Homeless Lunch at Drill Hall, which involves the co-ordination of 80 volunteers serving over 450 guests. Mr. Glover continues to be an inspiration for his commitment and dedication to his community.
Doreen Grandy, Ottawa, Ontario

An unswerving volunteer, Doreen Grandy has helped to raise countless funds for the Ottawa Hospital. Mrs. Grandy has managed the University of Ottawa Heart Institute’s volunteer gift shop since its inception in 1989. A former volunteer reservist with the Royal Navy and an avid sailor, John Malcolm Horton, of Richmond, British Columbia, has spent many years ensuring the safety of his fellow mariners. For 28 years, Mr. Horton has been a volunteer rescuer with the Canadian Marine Rescue Auxiliary and the Canadian Lifeboat Institution, the latter of which he helped to establish in 1990. He has also shared his expertise with sea cadets, and both professional and volunteer rescue crews. To this day, Mr. Horton continues his unwavering commitment to improving safety at sea and assisting those in peril.

Michel Kinumbe, a medical student originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, dedicates much of his spare time to young people in his community of Sherbrooke, Quebec. From 1998 until 2007, Mr. Kinumbe has worked with the Fédération des communautés culturelles de l’Estrie, and for the past 10 years has been an organizer of the Festival des Traditions du Monde. The youth of Sherbrooke continue to benefit greatly from Mr. Kinumbe’s international perspective and continual giving.
John Kolanchey, Morinville, Alberta

A veteran of the Korean War, John Kolanchey, of Morinville, Alberta, has put a lot of effort into assisting veterans and their families over the years. Since serving on the committee that oversaw the construction of the Kipnes Veterans Centre, Mr. Kolanchey has been a mainstay at the Centre. In addition, he has spent many hours counselling and assisting veterans by writing letters on their behalf, completing benefit applications, and accompanying them to appointments and meetings. Mr. Kolanchey is certainly an individual who does not hesitate to help those in need.

Mr. Léger is also involved with numerous organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, where, as a long-standing member, he oversees the annual food drive. Meanwhile, Mrs. Léger raises funds and helps with the Christmas Hamper program for the Daughters of Isabella, Marie-Reine-des-Cœurs Circle. For more than 25 years, Lionel and Lynda Mason, of Toronto, Ontario, have organized a bowling league called Woodchippers for persons with special needs. Among their many contributions to this cause, the Masons organize matches, manage the finances, host an annual tournament and banquet, and have even helped with the publication of a bowling manual for persons with special needs. The league currently maintains a roster of
150 bowlers and 30 volunteers. The Masons’ dedication embodies the spirit of community, and their patient, caring attitudes have touched the lives of many grateful people.

For the past 40 years, Sister McGrath has brought hope and comfort to many through her work with organizations such as the Hôpital Hôtel Dieu Saint-Joseph, the Résidence Mgr Arthur Melanson and the Saint-Sacrement de Saint-Quentin Parish. She has also been involved with the Cubs of Saint-Quentin. Sister McGrath continues to give endlessly of her time for the benefit of others.
Beth McKenty, Iqaluit, Nunavut
Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award
Beth McKenty, of Iqaluit, Nunavut, heard her true calling and had the courage to act. Concerned by the high rate of suicide in Nunavut, Ms. McKenty left her home in Calgary and moved to Iqaluit to help young people cope with hardship through artistic expression. The Arctic Youth Initiative, which Ms. McKenty runs from her home, engages youth and has grown to accommodate more than 300 children. She has also brought art programs to area schools. She also provides safety, warmth and food for many cold and hungry youth. Ms. McGrath bolsters a sense of pride, accomplishment and self-worth in many young people every year.
Jeffrey Morris, Sidney, British Columbia
Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award
Jeffrey Morris, of Sidney, British Columbia, has been greatly involved in the success of Angel Flight, a non-profit organization that provides free air transportation to persons requiring medical care. Since 2002, he has recruited pilots, liaised with hospitals and arranged ground transportation with other charitable groups to accommodate almost 200 trips each year. Thanks to Mr. Morris, many patients have been able to obtain the care they need. His compassion and caring for others in need is echoed through the time he spends on running the operations of the organization.
Heather Breanne Muir, Walkerton, Ontario

Heather Breanne Muir, of Walkerton, Ontario, a volunteer diagnosed with a rare medical condition at the age of four, has selflessly dedicated herself to being a strong voice for youth issues and to offering her assistance to the Canadian Blood Services. Ms. Muir is a past president of Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving association, a member of the local Optimist Club, of 4-H and of the National Liaison Committee of Canadian Blood Services. Today, Ms. Muir continues to devote a large part of her life to the promotion of valuable causes.
Eleanor Nielsen, Toronto, Ontario

A cancer survivor and dedicated volunteer, Eleanor Nielsen, of Toronto, Ontario, has given hope to thousands of women. For many years, Ms. Nielsen has volunteered with the Ontario Division of the Canadian Cancer Society and with Research for Recovery, a program for patients. In 1992, she co-founded Dragons Abreast, a dragon boat racing team established to raise funds for cancer research. Ms. Nielsen has also been very active with Hope Air, a non-profit air transportation service for patients with cancer. A quietly determined woman, Ms. Nielsen is strongly committed to helping others.
Rolande Patry, Bouchette, Quebec

For the past 60 years, Rolande Patry, a mother of 11 from Bouchette, Quebec, has worked throughout her community to develop and deliver charitable services. Among her many volunteer activities, Ms. Patry has made a long-standing commitment to the Association féminine en éducation et action sociale, has been a member of the Daughters of Isabella, Maniwaki Circle, since 1979, and was the president and supervisor of the Centre d’habitation des aînés de Bouchette. Ms. Patry is devoted to each of the many roles she takes on, for which she is held in very high regard.
James Chi Ming Pau, Vancouver, British Columbia

Since immigrating to Canada in 1975, Dr. James Chi Ming Pau has selflessly dedicated himself to providing health services and support to seniors, the disadvantaged and people with addictions, in the Downtown Eastside area of Vancouver. Shortly after his arrival, Dr. Pau immersed himself in his new community and has taken on roles such as those of member of the board of the Carnagie Community Centre, co-founder of the North American Buddhist Friendship Order, and founder of the HIV/IDU Services Consumers Board, which runs a needle exchange program. He has also provided free acupuncture sessions to many patients who could not otherwise afford to pay for the treatment. Dr. Pau works tirelessly to ensure that those in vulnerable situations know that there are people who truly care about their health and well-being.
Réjean Pelletier, Anjou, Quebec

Réjean Pelletier, of Anjou, Quebec, is a volunteer who has bettered the lives of thousands of youth through his exceptional involvement. Since 1988, Mr. Pelletier has devoted over 45 000 hours to the youth programs of the Optimist Club Ville d’Anjou. He has also been involved with the Ligue des Cadets de l’Air since 1991, serving as the regional director for East Montréal. Mr. Pelletier is always happy to help out where needed, whether as a hockey coach or as a fundraiser for a wide variety of causes.
Walter Ricketts, Vancouver, British Columbia

Walter Ricketts has been volunteering at the Triage Emergency Shelter in the Downtown Eastside area of Vancouver seven days a week, for the past 13 years. A quiet, unsung hero, Mr. Ricketts strips and cleans all 28 rooms each morning, does the laundry and maintains the building. In one of Canada’s most troubled communities, Mr. Ricketts is an example of remarkable kindness and true compassion.
Deborah Robertson, Sudbury, Ontario

Singer, cultural facilitator and performer, Deborah Robertson, of Sudbury, Ontario, has promoted healing and pride in her community through her work with youth. She has empowered Native youth through her work within the community, and has acted as a cultural ambassador through her performances of an Aboriginal honour song at a wide variety of charitable functions. Moreover, her commitment and leadership has had a profound and lasting effect on many young people in her community.
Sylvie Samson, Alexandria, Ontario

Sylvie Samson, a dynamic student from Alexandria, Ontario, is an exemplary young volunteer who is involved in a wide range of activities. Miss Samson has served on the executive boards of the Fédération de la jeunesse franco-ontarienne and the Association canadienne d’éducation de langue française for the Ontario region. She is also involved in her school’s pastoral community, volunteers with the theatre group Café Chantant, and plays the organ at Sainte-Marguerite d’Écosse church. Miss Samson is quick to contribute ideas and always brings a positive attitude to her volunteer commitments.
Philip Arthur Saunders, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador

For over 40 years, Philip Arthur Saunders, of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, has used his time, resources and talents to help others. Since founding the Kiwanis Club of Cabot in 1966, Mr. Saunders has served in a range of roles, including that of founding board member of the Kiwanis Music Festival Association of St. John’s. In addition, Mr. Saunders has devoted countless hours to serving his parish community, has served as the chair of the board of directors for the Waterford Hospital, and has been an executive member of the Victorian Order of Nurses for almost 50 years. Mr. Saunders is highly motivated by care and concern, a fact at once apparent to all who work with him.
David Martin Shulist, Wilno, Ontario

David Shulist, of Wilno, Ontario, is instrumental in the promotion and preservation of Canada’s Kashub heritage. To this end, he has been the president of the Wilno Heritage society since 1998, organizing numerous cultural events and community development initiatives. In addition, he spearheaded the campaign to construct Wilno Heritage Park, which includes a museum and a concert stage, and serves as a focal point for the town. Mr. Shulist is gifted at bringing people together to work towards a common goal, and the City of Wilno has greatly benefited as a result.
Thérèse St-Laurent, Rimouski, Quebec

A woman of great kindness and generosity, Thérèse St-Laurent, of Rimouski, Quebec, has volunteered for many years in order to provide assistance, support and comfort to others. Ms. St-Laurent has been involved with the Centre d’action bénévole for 23 years, serving in a number of roles. She also volunteered with the Association du cancer de l’Est du Québec for many years, and since 1996 has actively supported residents at the Centre de santé et de services sociaux Rimouski-Neigette. Ms. St-Laurent is a source of both inspiration and motivation to those with whom she works.
Joey Strati, Town of Pincourt, Quebec

In 1995, Joey Strati helped to found the first response emergency medical service in the Town of Pincourt, Quebec. The team of 35 volunteers responds to about 650 medical emergencies per year, and is available 24 hours per day, 365 days of the year. Mr. Strati’s persistence and dedication have made this group a model for other communities, and have ensured the safety and well-being of his fellow citizens.
Ronald S. Sullivan, Cornwall, Ontario

Ronald S. Sullivan, of Cornwall, Ontario, is a generous volunteer who has supported his fellow citizens, in particular the youth and the elderly, for well over 40 years. He is passionate about local theatre. Examples of his volunteer efforts include the founding of Glen Productions Theatre in 1965, and serving as chairman of the board of the Cornwall Arts Development Council for 18 years. A former high school teacher, Mr. Sullivan is an elder within his congregation, has supervised Sunday school for 36 years, and delivers fresh produce to the food bank throughout the summer. Mr. Sullivan’s involvement in the arts, in education and in the church, has served as an inspiration to many.
Sasha Tewari, Burnaby, British Columbia

An exemplary student, Sasha Tewari, of Burnaby, British Columbia, has made a positive impact and lasting impression on her community through her inspiration and leadership. Miss Tewari is the founder and president of Involvement Club: Charity Activists Relentlessly Envision (IC Care), a group dedicated to poverty relief in both the community and abroad. She has also worked for numerous Burnaby Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services programs as a supervisor of young children. Dedicated and passionate, Miss Tewari has made tangible differences in the lives of the families and children she has assisted.
Carolyn Gertrude Thomas, East Preston, Nova Scotia

For over 20 years, Carolyn Thomas, of East Preston, Nova Scotia, has been dedicated to making Canada a country where justice and equality for all prevails. Among her many commitments, Dr. Thomas is the chairperson of the Nova Scotia Advisory Committee on Race Relations, governor of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, and governor of the Canadian Centre on Police-Race Relations. She is also past regional vice-president of the Nova Scotia Red Cross Division, and past president of the East Preston Ladies Auxiliary. She has also been very active within the African United Baptist Association. In the advancement of these and many other causes, Dr. Thomas has always exhibited enthusiasm, resolve, courage and integrity.
Althea Janet Tolliver, East Preston, Nova Scotia

For more than 20 years, Althea Tolliver has been actively involved in the community of East Preston, Nova Scotia. Through her church, the Lions Club, and several local organizations, she has assisted and supported the well-being and advancement of youth. Among her many volunteer commitments, Mrs. Tolliver is a founding member of the Black Youth Help Line and the Association of Black Social Workers, is a member of the board of the Gordon Foundation and is secretary of the Preston Area Board of Trade. A faithful, hard-working volunteer, Mrs. Tolliver is the absolute embodiment of her personal motto: “While you might not be able to save the millions, you might be able to save the ones and twos as you go along doing what is right.”
Gérard Vachon, New Liskeard, Ontario

Gérard Vachon, of New Liskeard, Ontario, has spent many years in the service of his community and parish. He has volunteered with the Club Richelieu Témiskaming for over 35 years, and also created the Festival des Folies Franco-Fun, an annual French-language festival. Within his parish, Mr. Vachon has served as chair of the parish committee and as the church’s local representative of Development and Peace for
30 years. The entire community has certainly benefited from Mr. Vachon’s loyalty and persistence.
Peter Westwood Williams, Sudbury, Ontario

Peter Williams is known throughout Sudbury, Ontario, for his countless volunteer activities as well as for his warm and endearing personality. A volunteer with the Easter Seal Society for 15 years, Mr. Williams co-hosts its annual telethon and is an active fundraiser. He has also been the emcee for many Sudbury Symphony Orchestra events. Mr. William has hosted an annual Big Brothers and Big Sisters bowling event, and in 1998, he founded the Big Break, an annual fundraising pool tournament, for the organization. He also helps with the Neighbourhood Action Project of Sudbury food drive. Mr. Williams generously gives of his time, and is always willing to share his talents for the benefit of the community.
Joseph J. Zadzora, Ottawa, Ontario

For 13 years, Joe Zadzora’s tireless efforts have benefited the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa through his extensive involvement with the Brian Smith Memorial Golf Tournament. As co-chair since 2001, Mr. Zadzora is responsible for leading the team of over 70 volunteers who plan and host the annual event, which has raised over $1 million since its inception. Quick to pass recognition on to those with whom he works, Mr. Zadzora works tirelessly, understanding that each enhancement to the event may mean sending another deserving child to live an otherwise impossible dream at summer camp.
Connie Zolotar, London, Ontario

For years, Connie Zolotar has been an outstanding volunteer in London, Ontario. Mrs. Zolotar volunteers countless hours as the co-ordinator for the Northwest London Food Bank, spends many evenings helping out at the Main London Food Depot and facilitates the operations of the Collective Kitchen, a community kitchen for impoverished citizens. She is also active within her parish. A thoughtful team member, Mrs. Zolotar works quietly and effectively towards making her community a better place.
