Winnipeg, Manitoba – As part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is increasing funding to federal public service student employment programs to help Canadian students across the country acquire skills and work experience.
"Starting this summer and throughout the next two years, our government is investing more to support young Canadians," said Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board. "This means the creation of more jobs for students, as well as preparing them for the workforce, through experience and learning opportunities across the country."
Canada's Economic Action Plan is providing $20 million, over the next two years, to enhance federal public service student employment which last year resulted in the hiring of 23,000 post-secondary students. This additional funding will create new job opportunities for up to 2,000 additional students.
Funding under federal public service student employment programs is allocated directly to departments and agencies across the federal public service to pay for student salaries. These additional funds will allow the government to hire more students than previously planned. It will also benefit regional economies since over 60% of student jobs are outside the national capital region.
This year more Canadian students from all parts of the country can be hired by departments and agencies through three existing programs: the Federal Student Work Experience Program, the Co-operative Education and Internship Program and the Research Affiliate Program. The experience gained through these programs provides students with skills and abilities, including those sought by the public service.
This initiative also supports the Government's commitment to the renewal of the federal public service by giving potential recruits an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the large range of careers offered by the federal public service.
"Through our Economic Action Plan, Canada's government is investing in youth, creating jobs and stimulating the economy," said Toews.
