HALIFAX, April 3, 2009 — The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour, today visited United Parcel Service in Moncton, and EastLink in Halifax as part of a trip across Canada to promote the benefits of having safe and healthy workplaces.
“The Government of Canada is taking action to foster greater business productivity and enhance economic performance by promoting safer workplaces,” said Minister Ambrose. “A safe workplace is a productive workplace that allows workers and business owners to succeed.”
During the visits, Minister Ambrose highlighted the importance of health and safety in keeping Canada’s labour force strong, healthy and competitive. She shared with employers recent legislative changes to prevent injuries and illness in the workplace, including new violence prevention regulations and ergonomic provisions.
Minister Ambrose also took the opportunity to discuss the Racism-Free Workplace Strategy, which aims to create racism-free workplaces by fostering respect, equality and diversity.
The Moncton and Halifax visits are part of a seven-city tour that bring
Minister Ambrose to Toronto, Fort Erie, Niagara Falls, Winnipeg and Regina to highlight the Government of Canada’s commitment to improving occupational health and safety.
“Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our Government is committed to ensuring that our country emerges from the current global economic turbulence stronger than ever,” said Minister Ambrose. “At the same time, we are also committed to ensuring that Canada’s workplaces are safe, healthy and productive places for Canadians to work and for businesses to thrive.”
